Soundbug, sound sensing - Handclap chasing robug
Posted on Friday, January 03 @ 04:48:12 EST
Topic: Roböcekler
The soundbug came to life in 29th dec 2002 and became the last robot bug of the year 2002.

The bug which resembles its predecors for its looks has a distinctive new feature that hadn't been present in our past bugs. A couple of ears. :)

The bug uses a very sensitive condenser type microphone couple and two identical circuits to boost signals coming from the microphones to microprocessor input levels. The microprocessor senses the incoming signals and takes into account of the time difference between two arrivals. By the help of this, micro decides whether the sound source is on the right or left. After detecting the source's position, the bug can be driven towards or away from it. Though the sound sensing system works best on detecting hand clap, finger clap type sounds with short duration, the bug can detect rythms and maybe dance according to them.

If you take a closer look to the pic of Soundbug, you may see that there are more sensors than only a pair of microphones. The other sensors are a light sensor (photodiode) at the front, a modulated IR sensor (for IR obstacle detection and IR remote control), two mechanical bump sensors (feeler).

These sensors will be used in later versions of soundbug. Maybe they will all be incorporated in a final soundbug kit which will be sold here on our site.

I'm thinking of using two colored LED driven by the microcontroller as a pair of eyes, displaying life signs, eye blinks, red eyes when angry, green eyes when happy, namely a bit of emotions etc. If anyone of you have got ideas about this please write them to the end of the article as comments.

If you want to see soundbug in action, chasing a clapping hand, just read more for the download link to download a 20 second videoclip (253kb).
