A Classic Wooden Speedboat Reimagined for the Maker Community
There are few boats that capture the elegance of the early twentieth century quite like the classic gentleman’s runabout. Characterized by their polished mahogany hulls, long foredecks, graceful tumblehome sterns, and powerful inboard engines, these boats became symbols of craftsmanship and leisure during the golden age of recreational boating. Inspired by this timeless style, our latest project brings the spirit of these handcrafted classics into the world of additive manufacturing. The Gentleman’s Runabout combines authentic proportions with modern engineering, resulting in a large-scale 3D printable model that is equally suited for display and radio-controlled operation. A Functional Scale Model
Rather than producing a static shell, our goal was to create a model that behaves like a real boat. Measuring 125 cm (49.2 inches) in length, the runabout provides ample internal volume for electronics while maintaining the elegant appearance of its full-sized counterpart. Every structural component has been designed with both printability and strength in mind, allowing builders to assemble a rigid hull without requiring unusually large printers.
Like many recent Endtas releases, the project follows our RC-Ready philosophy. Internal space has been carefully planned for propulsion components, batteries, steering hardware, and wiring, allowing builders to customize the model according to their preferred performance characteristics.
Powered by an Iconic Fiat Engine
One feature that makes this project especially distinctive is the inclusion of our detailed 27-liter Fiat inline engine. Rather than hiding the mechanical heart of the boat beneath a simple cover, we wanted the engine compartment to become one of the highlights of the build.
The printable engine recreates the appearance of a classic Fiat marine conversion with numerous individual components that reward careful assembly and painting. Whether displayed with the engine hatch open or incorporated into a fully operational RC model, it adds another layer of realism rarely found in printable boat kits.
Designed for Everyday FDM Printers
Although the completed model measures 1.25 meters, every component has been optimized to fit printers with a 250 × 250 × 260 mm build volume. The hull is divided into modular sections that simplify printing while maintaining structural rigidity after assembly.
Builders can print the parts using standard PLA or PETG depending on their intended use. PETG is recommended for hull components intended for radio-controlled operation because of its increased toughness and improved water resistance, while PLA remains an excellent choice for decorative details and display models.
Careful attention has also been paid to minimizing support material wherever possible, reducing print time without sacrificing surface quality.
Built for Builders
One of the most rewarding aspects of this project is the assembly process itself. Rather than simply gluing together a handful of large sections, builders gradually construct a complete vessel from numerous precisely designed components.
The detailed deck fittings, cockpit, engine compartment, steering position, and hull structure all come together to recreate the appearance of a handcrafted wooden speedboat. The modular approach also makes painting, finishing, and maintenance considerably easier than would be possible with a single-piece hull.
Whether you prefer a showroom-quality varnished mahogany finish or a custom color scheme, the model offers plenty of opportunities for personalization.
