USS Growler (SSG-577) 3D model

A Cold War Missile Submarine and It’s Mighty Weapon the Regulus 1, Recreated in 3D

The USS Growler (SSG-577) occupies a unique and transitional place in naval history. Conceived during the early years of the Cold War, Growler was part of the U.S. Navy’s first serious attempt to field a submarine-launched strategic missile capability. Long before ballistic missile submarines became dominant, vessels like Growler were designed around the Regulus cruise missile, a large, aircraft-like weapon that required deck storage, surface launch, and complex handling procedures. This requirement fundamentally shaped the submarine’s appearance, resulting in its most recognizable feature: the massive twin missile hangars integrated into the forward deck.

Our USS Growler – Articulated Regulus Missile Submarine 3D model is a carefully interpreted recreation of this unconventional vessel. While strongly inspired by the real submarine, the model has been deliberately optimized for additive manufacturing, structural robustness, and builder-friendly assembly. At a finished length of approximately 85 cm, the model corresponds to a scale of roughly 1:112, accurately reflecting the imposing proportions of the real 94.8-meter submarine while remaining compatible with standard desktop 3D printers. The characteristic hull form, sail geometry, and deck layout are preserved, while finer details are interpreted where necessary to ensure clean geometry and reliable printing.

Articulation, Modularity, and Historical Expression

A defining goal of this model was to preserve the mechanical and operational character of the original vessel. All major control and mission-defining elements are fully articulated, including the bow and stern dive planes, rudder, propellers, periscopes, and—most importantly—the missile hangar hatches. These features allow the builder to pose the submarine in multiple historically inspired configurations, from a clean, closed-deck patrol appearance to a missile handling or launch-preparation scenario.

To support this, the model includes a Regulus missile, specifically scaled and proportioned to fit inside the deck hangars. This enables a variety of display options and highlights the unique operational concept that set Growler apart from later ballistic missile submarines. The inclusion of the missile transforms the model from a simple hull replica into a narrative piece that communicates how the vessel was actually intended to function.

Designed for Large-Scale 3D Printing

The model is supplied as 50+ individual STL files, segmented to fit the build volumes of standard desktop 3D printers while minimizing the need for support material. The breakdown emphasizes logical assembly, clean alignment, and structural integrity, making the project approachable for experienced builders who enjoy complex, multi-part models. A full-color 3MF file is also included for users with color-capable printers or slicers, simplifying part identification and orientation during printing.

Although the model is primarily intended as a static display piece, its articulated elements and modular structure offer ample opportunity for further detailing, mechanical refinement, or experimental enhancements by advanced modelers. The entire model can also be scaled up or down to suit different display requirements or printer capabilities.

In essence, this project is a tribute to one of the most unconventional submarines ever put to sea. The USS Growler model is designed not only to look impressive on display, but also to provide a deeply engaging build experience—one that reflects the ingenuity, ambition, and experimental spirit of early Cold War naval engineering.
