1:96 Scale 3D Printable Model
The Most Detailed RC-Ready Coast Guard Cutter Ever Designed for Home Builders

About the Legend Class National Security Cutter
The Legend Class National Security Cutter represents the pinnacle of the United States Coast Guard’s deepwater fleet capability. Built by Huntington Ingalls Industries in Pascagoula, Mississippi, these formidable vessels were designed to replace the aging Hamilton-class high endurance cutters and bring the Coast Guard’s operational reach firmly into the 21st century. Stretching over 127 meters in length and displacing more than 4,500 tons, the Legend Class is a true oceangoing warship in everything but name — capable of operating in the most hostile sea states on earth while conducting the full spectrum of Coast Guard missions.
Named after legendary figures in the history of the United States Coast Guard, these cutters are built for endurance, versatility, and projection. Their mission portfolio is extraordinarily broad: maritime law enforcement, counter-narcotics operations, search and rescue in open ocean conditions, fisheries protection, defense readiness, and even support for national security operations alongside the US Navy. Each vessel carries a sophisticated sensor suite, communication systems, and weapons fit including the Mk 110 57mm deck gun and the Phalanx Close-In Weapon System — making them among the most capable cutters ever operated by the service. USCGC Bertholf, the lead ship of the class and the primary photographic reference for this model, was commissioned in 2008 and has since logged thousands of operational hours across the Pacific, Atlantic, and beyond.

About This Model
This 3D printable model brings the Legend Class to life at 1:96 scale, producing a finished vessel approximately 1.3 meters long — a genuinely commanding presence on any shelf, display stand, or waterway. The model was developed using extensive photographic documentation of USCGC Bertholf as the primary reference, capturing the real ship’s proportions, deck arrangements, superstructure geometry, and surface details as faithfully as possible. Where classified or simply unavailable official blueprints left gaps, available technical drawings of similar vessel types were used alongside photographs to reconstruct accurate hull lines and structural relationships. The result is a model that is not merely inspired by the Legend Class — it is shaped by it, photograph by photograph, frame by frame.

Every major feature of the real vessel has been faithfully interpreted at scale. The distinctive superstructure, mast arrangement, flight deck, and stern ramp are all represented. The hangar, one of the most visually prominent features of the ship, is available in four different door configurations — fully open, fully closed, and intermediate positions — so each builder can portray the ship in exactly the operational state they prefer. The rear ramp sliding doors are fully functional, adding another layer of authentic detail to the stern section.

And for weapons enthusiasts, a complete and highly detailed Phalanx CIWS is included at 1:96 scale, perfectly matched to the ship — yet carrying enough geometric fidelity that it can be scaled up to a standalone 40 cm display model and still retain an impressive level of surface detail and mechanical character.

Designed for RC Operation
From the very first design decisions, this model was built with radio control in mind. The hull and internal layout are optimized to accommodate RC electronics without compromise. Control surfaces are fully articulated, and dedicated motor mounts are integrated directly into the design — no improvisation, no adaptation required.

All deck panels across the model are removable and configurable: builders can set them up as functional access lids, allowing easy reach to batteries, ESCs, receivers, and servos during operation and maintenance, or glue them permanently shut for a clean, seamless display finish.

Every single deck panel also features screw holes, meaning that even panels glued shut can be reopened cleanly and precisely if access is ever needed down the line. The model accommodates the full range of standard RC hardware, and the internal volume of the hull at this scale is generous enough to house even sophisticated multi-channel setups with room to spare.

3D Printing — Accessible, Practical, and Builder-Friendly
One of the central goals in designing this model was to make it genuinely buildable by as many people as possible, without sacrificing detail or ambition. The entire hull is assembled from approximately 20 core pieces, each carefully sliced to fit on print beds as small as 22×22 cm — meaning builders with most standard FDM printers will have no difficulty tackling even the largest hull sections. There is no requirement for an oversized or specialist machine to build a 1.3 meter ship.

Assembly has been engineered to be straightforward and satisfying. Every hull piece features precision-designed alignment details and integrated mounting geometry, so parts come together accurately and without guesswork. Two dedicated clip types are included specifically to hold pieces firmly in position while adhesive cures — eliminating the frustration of parts shifting during glue-up and ensuring clean, tight joints throughout the build. With these in place, even large hull sections can be bonded confidently without the need for elaborate clamping setups.

Beyond the core hull, the package contains over 200 STL files in total. The remainder consists of a comprehensive library of accessories, fittings, deck details, and optional components that allow each builder to determine their own level of finishing detail. Some accessories are essential; others are entirely optional enhancements for those who want to push the model to the highest possible level of completeness. This tiered approach means the model is equally rewarding whether you are building a clean, elegant display piece or an obsessively detailed scale replica.

Color, Texture, and Filament Strategy
This model has been developed with a thoughtful approach to color and surface finishing that goes well beyond what is typical for 3D printable ship models. The underwater hull and superstructure components are separated into distinct parts throughout the design — a deliberate choice that allows builders to load different colored filaments for each section and achieve a fully two-tone finish straight off the printer, without any painting required. The correct red-orange antifouling below the waterline and the classic USCG white and grey above it can be reproduced simply by selecting the right filament, saving a significant amount of post-processing time.

For builders with color-capable 3D printers, a complete 3MF file is included with full color and texture data embedded. This allows the entire model to be printed in rich, realistic color in a single workflow — producing a result that is visually striking and display-ready with minimal finishing work. The textures and color maps applied to this model are also of sufficient quality that the files are well-suited for use in 3D game engines and virtual environments, making this a versatile asset for digital creators, simulation developers, and visualization professionals as well as physical builders.
A Model Built to Last
Whether your goal is a faithful static display, a working RC vessel, a richly detailed game asset, or simply the deeply satisfying challenge of a large and complex build, this Legend Class Cutter has been designed to meet you there. It is a model that rewards patience and attention, but one that has also been engineered at every step to make the process as clear, practical, and enjoyable as possible. Over 200 files. 1.3 meters of finished ship. One of the most capable cutters ever to sail under the Stars and Stripes — now ready for your print bed.
